The Manufacturer Interview Checklist

Ownership, testing, MOQ, communication and what happens when the sample misses.

1. Fit before price

A low MOQ is useful. It is not enough. First find out whether the partner has made your format, worked with your target markets and can support the testing your product needs.

They regularly make my product format and can describe comparable technical challenges. They can work with the ingredient grades, packaging and certification direction I need. Their minimum batch, pilot options and lead times fit my actual launch plan.

2. Ownership and formula access

The agreement states who owns the final formula and manufacturing method. I know whether I receive exact percentages or only an INCI list. I know what happens to my formula if I move manufacturers. Any exclusivity, transfer fee or raw-material lock-in is written clearly.

3. Sampling and communication

The number, price and timing of sample rounds are clear. I know who receives feedback and how formula changes are recorded. Each sample arrives with a code and a plain explanation of what changed. The escalation route for delays or repeated misses is clear.

4. Testing, production and release

Stability, compatibility, microbial and safety responsibilities are assigned. I know which tests are included, outsourced or billed separately. Pilot approval, specifications, batch records and release checks are documented. The quote separates formula, raw materials, packaging, filling, testing and freight.

5. The decision

A useful starting point, not a safety sign-off.

Final formula, regulatory, claims, stability and safety decisions belong with the qualified partners responsible for your product and launch market.
